Chief of Staff of President's Office Ali Zahir, on Monday, declared that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration will cater to the people mindfully and with careful planning, adding that speedy progress in development projects will be observed in the near future.
Ali Zahir, who is the Vice President of Adhaalath Party (AP) in the ruling coalition, made this statement following criticism by opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), which accused the current government of failure to inaugurate development projects and delay in providing facilities.
Vice President of PPM and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam told local media Mihaaru that the people were unhappy with the high costs of living. He further stated that President Solih's administration had not "overturned a single rock" for development.
Ali Zahir addressed these comments in a tweet stating that the government will not mindlessly "overturn rocks" in the name of development and destroy establishments in the process. On the other hand, he asserted that services and projects will be carried out with well-informed long term plans.
Ali Zahir, who guaranteed that all upcoming development projects will be in the best interest of the people, had previously criticised former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration for carrying out projects with poor planning and corruption.
Senior officials of the government have noted Dharumavantha Hospital and Nasandhura Palace Hotel as examples of overpriced projects of former President Yameen's government. Yameen faced harsh criticism with claims that Dharumavantha Hospital could have been constructed for one third of its cost.
Supporters of Yameen defend such claims stating that the former president carried out the projects speedily within a short period of time.
The current administration came into power with pledges of prioritizing basic necessities, protection of human rights, implementing justice and assuring progress through development projects.
Various pledges were made concerning immediate improvements required for each sector. The President's Office revealed that 83 percent of the pledges were completed within the first 100 days of government.
