Interpol has issued a red notice against former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed, who fled abroad following charges of sexual harassment and rape.
A media official from the Maldives Police Service said that they are working with the Prosecutor General's Office regarding the red notice issued for the request of Maldives Police Service.
Interpol issues red notices for fugitives wanted either for prosecution or to serve a sentence for the request of another law enforcement agency of a member country. A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
Despite the Maldivian government's several efforts, the extradition of the embittered former minister, who lives in United Kingdom, still remains fruitless while the country's apex court had sentenced him to jail - but this too, was met with inaction over his sudden absconding.
State has pressed a total of seven different charges against Waheed, while a successful conviction of the alleged perpetrations will mean at least 21 years of jail time for the former minister.
