Maldives has condemned the continuous military aggression by Israeli forces against unarmed civilians in the Gaza Strip, the latest of which includes the bombardment of tents in southern Gaza city of Rafah where hundreds of displaced Palestinians were taking shelter.

An Israeli strike killed 45 people in a camp housing displaced Palestinians. The Palestinian Health Ministry said more than 200 people were injured in the incident.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last night, the Maldives government strongly condemned the attacks and said that "such deliberate aggression and genocidal acts targeted against civilians are in gross violation of international humanitarian law".

The Maldives called on to Israel to abide by the emergency ruling of the International Court of Justice to immediately halt its offensive in Rafah, as well as the Court’s previous decisions calling on Israel to “take all measures within its power” to prevent death, destruction and any acts of genocide in Gaza.

"The government and the people of the Maldives remain in firm solidarity with the people of Palestine and reiterate unwavering support for Palestine’s legitimate right to statehood through the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital," the statement read.

Palestine's ethnic cleansing by Israeli forces began as early as the 1948 Nakba and since then Palestine has become a besieged enclave overtime.

More than 35,700 Palestinians have been killed, according to the Health Ministry, since Israel started its war on Gaza on October 7 in retaliation to a Hamas attack which killed about 1,200 Israelis.

The UN estimates that more than 800,000 people have fled Rafah since Israel launched its offensive.

Israeli forces have been blocking the entry of essential aid supplies and medicines, and targeting hospitals and other medical facilities, which could cause imminent famine in Gaza, according to the UN.
