Former NIC President Maaniu was dismissed from his position on November 23, 2017, after the commission stated that certain high ranking members of Police had interfered with some NIC investigations and warned that legal action would be taken against such officers.

The coalition party is currently making preparations for the parliamentary election slated for April 6. JP’s Chief Spokesperson Ali Solih stated that interested individuals can submit their candidacy until January 25. He also stated that the decision to hold a primary election will be made if circumstances necessitated one.

The JP council has created a committee to finalise which applicants are eligible to contest for a parliament seat on behalf of the party. The committee is led by Minister of Tourism Minister Ali Waheed who is also the party’s president.
