Prime Minister Modi secured victory in the Varanasi seat for a third term with a victory margin of 152,513 votes. However, in 2019, he won the seat with a larger margin of 500,000 votes.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the Maldives is a valued partner and neighbour in the Indian Ocean region.

Modi made this comment in his response to President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's congratulatory message on the social media platform X, on his victory in the Indian General Election 2024, securing a third term.

Congratulating on the election win, President Muizzu expressed hopes for collaboration in enhancing the shared goals in development and stability of Maldives and India.

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef also extended his congratulations to Prime Minister Modi and the ruling party BJP on their victory in the elections. He expressed confidence that the relationship and cooperation between Maldives and India would be strengthened and enhanced under his leadership.

BJP and allied parties won a total of 292 seats, with BJP candidates securing victory in 240 seats. This falls short of the 272 majority mark, which is fewer than the 303 and 282 seats the party had won in 2019 and 2014 respectively, to have a majority on its own.

The Congress, part of the opposition INDIA bloc, secured victory in 99 seats, a significant increase from the 52 seats it won in 2019. The Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s Parliament, comprises a total of 543 seats.
