The new runway of Velana International Airport will be opened for operations next year, announced Maldives Airport Company Ltd (MACL) on Thursday.
The runway is part of the largest development and expansion project undertaken at Maldives' main airport. While the test flight landed on the strip on September 18 this year, the runway is yet to be officially opened as development is still ongoing.
According to MACL's Associate General Manager Hassan Areef, construction of the runway has been completed. The work currently underway includes development of the taxiway, navigation light system, and levelling the landscape.
Areef added that expansion of the apron, located on the eastern side of the runway, is also nearing completion. The area of the apron is expected to increase from the current 86,000 square metres to 212,000.
