The Strategic Action Plan (SAP) compiled by the current administration noted that an additional 30,000 households will be required by 2028, considering that an average of four people live in each household, promising solutions for the current housing situation.
So far, every previous administration has pledged and failed to provide a significant solution to this issue.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government vowed to establish 20,000 residences by 2023.
As part of fulfilling this pledge, the state announced the commencement of a housing project in November. This will facilitate the establishment of 4,200 housing units in the Male' region and 5,000 housing units in other atolls under a social housing scheme.
President Solih set deadlines on measures implemented to tackle the housing shortages, an issue he described as one of the state's highest priorities.
Including migrant workers, the population of Maldives currently stands at approximately 530,000. As per this rate, the state's action plan estimates that the population will reach 650,000 by 2028.
- Establishing 20,000 housing units within five years and handing them over to chosen applicants
- Ensuring all families displaced in the 2004 tsunami are provided housing by the end of 2020
- Providing housing for all the families that the state relocated to other islands by the end of 2021
- Granting loans worth at least MVR 1 billion under the National Affordable Housing Loan Scheme
In addition, the government will compile a registry to ensure that housing is provided under a reliable and impartial system.
Moreover, the state will assign a higher priority to those who require social security and assured that no individual will be excluded from housing opportunities due to their financial situation.
