A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday to seek Bahrain's assistance in strengthening Maldives' cyber security.

The agreement signed between the Government of Maldives and Bahrain Telecommunication Company (BATELCO) and Dhiraagu was during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's ongoing visit to Bahrain.

"Under the MoU, the National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT), the leading digital development agency in the Maldives, will be able to provide services through the experienced resources of Dhiraagu and BATELCO to ensure a safe cyber space for Maldivians," NCIT said in a statement.

Areas of focus under this MoU include advisory and consultancy, security engineering, cyber defence, security assurance, cyber threat and threat hunting, as well as incident response.

Minister for Environment, Climate Change, and Technology Aminath Shauna said with this agreement, cyber security specialists should work with many senior officials of the private and public sectors at the national and international levels.

Chairman of BATELCO Abdulla bin Khalifa Al Khalifa praised the close relations between Maldives and Bahrain, especially the efforts of Dhiraagu, BATELCO's international operation in the communication sector.

CEO of Dhiraagu Ismail Rasheed said that the project to strengthen cyber security in the Maldives will facilitate sharing of knowledge and experience with NCIT and hope to benefit the government, businesses and the public as well.

With a total of 52 percent, BATELCO is the company that holds the most amount of stocks in Maldives' largest telecommunication company; Dhiraagu. The Maldivian government's share is 41.8 percent, while the remaining 6.2 percent shares are held by the general public of Maldives.
