Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed was visibly crossed with Minister Shauna's endorsement of Mr. Fayyaz Ismail for the ruling party's chairperson position.

The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Environment Ms. Aminath Shauna had publicly voiced her approval of Minister of Economic Development Mr. Fayyaz Ismail for the chairperson position of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Following this publicized endorsement, Parliament Speaker and the former Maldivian President voiced strong criticism.

Nasheed accused the Environment Minister's public endorsement of her cabinet ally as a move to anchor her employment.

He further shot back at her asking her to refrain from instructing the party on its policies, which according to Nasheed its general members were fully aware of.

The Parliament Speaker's stern criticism was directed at the minister in relation to a campaign video that showed all the notable political figures endorsing Fayyaz for the chairperson position.

While endorsing Minister Fayyaz for the chairperson position, his ally, Ms. Shauna had commented on the significant strides made under the MDP-led administration since coming to power in 2018.

Ms. Shauna further asserted that the current administration was in line with the earlier policies formed to ensure financial sustainability among the public.

She also highlighted on the successful initiatives carried out by the current administration in facilitating free-degree opportunities for over 10,000 local students, minimum wage implementation for resort workers as well as introduction of job opportunities.

Other prominent members of MDP who publicly voiced their support to Minister Fayyaz include Mr. Ahmed Naseem, the current Minister of Health, who is a close friend of Nasheed.

Minister Fayyaz faces stiff competition from North-Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, who is endorsed by Nasheed himself, though the Parliament Speaker had refrained from publicly showing his support.
