Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer held discussions with Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to seek potential funding opportunities for Maldives development initiatives.

The minister met with AIIB President Jin Liqun for the discussion.

In a tweet via X, the minister said that discussions were held regarding potential funding avenues to advance President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's "ambitious development agenda".

In a tweet, the minister said that infrastructure investments in major population centers, including Addu City and Gaafu Dhaalu atoll Thinadhoo, regional airports, and the transition to solar energy were part of the discussed topics.

Minister Zameer, who is part of President Muizzu's delegation attending the COP28 summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), reiterated the current government's commitment to achieving the President's goal of completing and opening Velana International Airport (VIA) by the tourist season in 2024.

AIIB, founded in 2014 is an initiative of the Chinese government. The bank had provided a loan support of USD 7.3 million to the Maldives government amid the Covid-19 pandemic as economic relief.
