Ruling party People's National Congress (PNC) Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem (Red Wave) said last night that the Maldivian economy will improve, and there will be no issues in repaying loans in the coming years.
At the PNC hub meeting, MP Saleem, one of the country's most successful businessmen and a senior member of the ruling PNC, stated that the government is not running out of Maldivian Rufiyaa. He emphasized that loans must be repaid in USD, which presents a challenge in securing the necessary finances.
Saleem criticized the loan practices of the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration.
"You think about it, there has never been a loan in the history of this country which has to repay MVR 1 billion within one year. Even a regular person will not take a loan except in proportion to his monthly salary," Saleem said.
"We are talking about a government that has done such a serious thing. Even a child will know this. MVR 1 billion is two-thirds of the revenue of the Maldives."
MP Saleem expressed confidence that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's government will improve the economic situation through discussions and counsel despite the difficult times.
Referring to the government's cost cutting measures, MP Saleem described it as a reform initiative, assuring that the people will not face difficulties.
“Ordinary citizens in need of services will not be deprived of anything,” Saleem said.
He urged the public not to believe rumors that Aasandha, the universal health insurance scheme, would be discontinued.
Deputy Speaker of the Parliament and Dhigurah MP Ahmed Nazim also said that the people will not suffer the consequences of any measures taken by the government to reduce expenditure due to the current economic difficulties faced by the nation.
"Even if measures are taken to reduce expenditure, assistance provided to those in need, including the provision of Aasandha, will continue," Nazim said.
