Imports up, exports down in January: Customs

Maldives Customs Service declared that imports heightened while exports dwindled in January.

According to Custom's statistics, MVR 4 billion worth of goods were imported into the country last month. This is a six percent increase compared to MVR 3.8 billion in the same period last year.

With 21 percent of imports from the United Arab Emirates,16 percent from China, and 10 percent from Singapore, these three countries made the top of the list.

Additionally, nine percent imports were from India, and eight percent from Malaysia.

Cargo worth MVR 342.6 million were exported last month, which is a 28 percent decline in contrast to MVR 473.2 million in January 2018.

While 17 percent of merchandise were exported to Germany, 14 percent goods were exported to both United States of America and United Kingdom. Moreover,10 percent of exported goods were to France, and eight percent to Thailand.

Although exports decreased, total revenue increased this year by 14 percent. Revenue for January is MVR 306.6 milliion, while for January 2018, the amount was at MVR 268 million.
