Ministry of Education, on Tuesday, announced that the ministry was hiring new teachers for government-run schools across the country.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary Ahmed Ali confirmed that the ministry is seeking Maldivian teachers, under the Civil Service guidelines, to replace the 2,000 or so expatriates currently filling those teaching positions.

Expatriate teachers are hired annually for the academic new year, but since this date has been pushed back to August 10, 2021, the Education Ministry has renewed the contracts for foreign teachers who wish to remain employed.

According to Ahmed Ali, 212 schools were instructed to open applications for local teachers by Tuesday.

“These are employment opportunities for Maldivians”, he said.

He added that, under normal circumstances, new local teachers were hired once every three months. However, the situation due to COVID-19 had affected the hiring process.

After a break of one month, the second semester of the ongoing academic year is scheduled to begin on January 10.
