The Indian High Commissioner Sunjay Sudhir, on Monday, inaugurated the 'Kolhufushi streetlights project' in Meemu Atoll.

The virtual inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid, as well as Kolhufushi Island Council's President Hussain Shamil.

Financed by a grant assistance of MVR 1.5 million, the government of Maldives installed a total of 115 street lights on the island.

During the ceremony, High Commissioner Sudhir remarked that the Kolhufushi Project was a "perfect candidate for inclusion in India's High-Impact Community Development Project scheme" under which several projects are being implemented in Maldives.

He further noted that the project was carried out with full involvement of the local council through each stage of implementation.

Conveying appreciation for facilitating such an "important project", Minister Shahid said the initiative aims to reduce instances of crime and provide a state of enhanced security for the local community, improving quality of life on the island.

High Commissioner Sudhir also expressed pride in India's involvement in the project, noting that they would expand the suburb's infrastructure as well as promote healthy lifestyles.

"India is proud to partner with the government of Maldives in the realization of such meaningful and socially beneficial projects", said HC Sudhir.

India provided the financial support under the grant assistance of USD 6.9 million (MVR 106 million) extended to Maldives by the Indian government in March 2019. The grant assistance aims to conduct high-impact socio-economic development projects across the country, which are managed by local authorities.
