Following the completion of a special training by the Maldives Bar Council, 227 lawyers were newly sworn in as attorneys during a virtual ceremony held Saturday.
In the event attended by both Supreme Court Chief Justice Muthasim Adnan and former Attorney General Dr Mohamed Munavvar, High Court Judge Mohamed Niyaz administered the oaths.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Justice advised the new lawyers to refrain from pursing the field for financial gains, adding that such motivations will not yield success within the field.
According to an amendment passed to the Legal Profession Act, Maldives Bar Council conducted a month-long training programme for law graduates that remain unable to take the oaths of legal practice as a result of the bar council failing to formulate the mandated bar exam for new law graduates before they are sworn in.
However, the 227 lawyers that successfully completed the training programme from the 323 that participated, are required to attend the bar exam once after the Bar Council prepares the course.
