A Maldives Correctional Service officer has been arrested for attempting to smuggle narcotics into Asseyri prison in Kaafu atoll Himmafushi.
Prisons Commissioner Ahmed Mohamed tweeted confirming that the officer was arrested in a joint operation with the Maldives Police Service based on intelligence information received by the authority.
He said that the officer was arrested with illegal narcotics in their possession and has been suspended since.
Allegedly, smuggling of electronic items, mobile phones, and drugs into prisons is facilitated by some Correctional Service officers who are involved in such activities. In the past, several officers have been arrested for their involvement in such incidents.
While the authorities have recently suspended an officer, another officer was suspended in November 2022 for a similar incident.
In 2020, the Correctional Service terminated 10 officers after acquiring sufficient evidence against them for being caught with drugs in their possession.
