Minister of Youth, Sports and Community Development, Ahmed Mahloof on Sunday, stated his decision to award MVR 20,000 to each athlete and official of the Under-18 National Football Team over a bronze medal finish at the 'South Asian Football Federation U−18 Championship'.
Speaking at a ceremony to celebrate the team's success in achieving a silver medal finish, Minister Mahloof highlighted a recent regulation passed by the newly formed National Sports Council, which stipulates the amount of reward money awarded to podium placements at international sporting events.
According to the Minister, the previous amount to be awarded for a silver medal finish was MVR 5000 as opposed to the newly formulated MVR 20,000.
The Minister has faced public criticism over his decision to award financial rewards.
