Travel expenses ran up MVR 3 million over budget

Statistics published by the Ministry of Finance show that travel costs have exceeded this year's budget allocation by MVR 3 million, with the total cost now reaching MVR 231 million.

Statistics published by the Ministry of Finance show that travel costs have exceeded this year's budget allocation by MVR 3 million, with the total cost now reaching MVR 231 million.

Weekly financial report released by the Finance Ministry show that MVR 228 million had been allocated in the budget as travel expenses. No addition to this was included in the supplementary budget.

As per the budget, MVR 69 million is allocated for foreign travel. The allocation for air travel was MVR 54 million, and another MVR 45 million for travel via sea.

The travel expenditure this year shows an increase of approximately 7 percent compared to last year. Last year, MVR 216 million had been spent in the same period.

Of the State budget, MVR 40 billion has been spent to date. The highest expenses, like previous years, was for salaries of government employees and operational costs of offices. For this, MVR 28 billion has been spent, which is 70 percent of total expenditure.

With the supplementary budget passed last month, the total budget for the year is expected to reach MVR 55 billion.
