STELCO to plant 500,000 trees in five years

STELCO has signed an agreement to plant at least 500,000 trees within the next five years. Minister Thoriq said that the government plans to plant over 90 different types of plants across the Maldives within five years.

State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has signed an agreement to plant at least 500,000 trees within the next five years.

Earlier this morning, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the five million trees plantation program.

Planting five million trees in his five year term to make the Maldives a greener environment, for increased vigilance in the face of threats posed by climate change is a presidential pledge.

The agreement was signed by STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy of behalf of the company while Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim on behalf of the ministry.

STELCO had officially launched the tree planting program in Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo today.

Minister Thoriq said that the government plans to plant over 90 different types of plants across the Maldives within five years under this program. The planted trees will be monitored, and their health and carbon intake will also be measured.
