Urbanco has signed with the Island Council of Alifu Alifu atoll Thoddoo, to commence a Smart Island initiative on the island.
The Managing Director of Urbanco, Ahmed Athif, and the President of Thoddoo Island Council, Ahmed Karam, signed the agreement this Tuesday.
Urbanco, which is the former Housing Development Corporation (HDC), signed with the Thoddoo council for this project as part of its "Go Beyond Hulhumalé’" project. This is also the first project outside of the Greater Malé area for the corporation, encapsulating its current vision of expanding its service portfolio across the Maldives.
Karam said that Urbanco will be installing an Open Access Network as part of the new agreement.
"This will benefit the council in many ways; we can generate a good income from the service providers' sales. Other parties will no longer be required to install [network] cables on the island now, and we can provide these services," Karam said.
He also said that an Open Access Network was the most important digital infrastructure to transform Thoddoo into a Smart Island.
Besides the installation of the Open Access Network, Urbanco will also offer urban design consulting for Thoddoo’s harbour area, ferry terminal, cargo warehouse, and public and tourist beaches on the island.
Thoddoo Council’s President assured the project will be completed in three months.
