Social media activist Ahmed Shareef, popularly known by his online monikor Shumba, on Sunday requested the police to launch a criminal investigation into his arrest and extradition from Sri Lanka in 2015.
In a letter to Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed, Ashraf requested investigations into:
- Former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer
- Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Dunya Maumoon
- Former Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka Zahiya Zareer
- Former Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef
- Former Assistant Commissioner Abdulla Nawaz
- Former Defence Attache Ahmed Giyas
He accused the mentioned of being involved in his extradition, accusing that he had been kidnapped.
Ashraf filed the letter following President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's remark last Thursday, that Ashraf's extradition by the previous government was unlawful. In comments made to media regarding the ongoing efforts to extradite the conspirator behind the coup of November 3, 1988, President Solih stated that the previous administration had brought Ashraf back to Maldives without the authorisation of the Sri Lankan government.
The activist was arrested in his residence jointly by Maldivian and Sri Lankan police, based on the intelligence provided by the Maldivian embassy in Colombo. The operation was not authorised by the Sri Lankan government, and the state had later issued a harsh statement against the Maldivian administration regarding the issue.
