The virtual autopsy report of Zakiyya Moosa, found dead at her home in Noonu Atoll Holhudhoo, has concluded that she died from self-inflicted injuries.

Zakiyya, 50, underwent a virtual autopsy conducted by a police team who traveled to India last month.

The procedure was carried out in collaboration with expert doctors from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), one of India's leading medical research institutions.

A virtual autopsy combines tests such as CT scans, MRIs, and analysis of photographs and videos of both the body and the crime scene to determine the cause of death.

This method also helps identify physical changes in the body and the nature of the injuries.

Zakiyya, who had reportedly been dealing with psychological issues, was discovered around 10:00 a.m. on September 10 near a storeroom adjacent to the kitchen of her home.

While some family members and residents of the island have raised doubts, alleging that Zakiyya did not commit suicide, claiming her neck was almost severed, the autopsy findings suggest otherwise.

The report indicates that the wounds on both sides of Zakiyya’s neck had severed nerves, but there was no sign of any deep damage to the bones. It also addressed key concerns, explaining why there was no blood splatter and providing insights into how the injuries might have been sustained.

Some argue that the severity of the injuries suggests that no one would inflict such harm on themselves. This has led to occasional protests in Holhudhoo, calling for justice for Zakiyya.

The opinions of U.S. and British experts were sought, and they have said that it is not uncommon for individuals to die from such injuries.

At a press briefing last December, Police Chief Inspector Mohamed Samih said hospital findings pointed to neck injuries as the cause of death. Zakiyya had sustained three deep wounds on the right side of her neck, two on the left, and a shallow cut in the centre.
