Maldives International Marathon to be held in March

Maldives International Marathon, the first international running event hosted by the Maldives, is to commence on March 8, in reclaimed suburb Hulhumale.

The event approved by the Ministry of Tourism, is held in association with 'Unix Sporting', local event management company 'Object' and the famous running club 'iRunners'. Applications for the marathon opened on Thursday.

Components of the event include a marathon, half marathon, 10-kilometre and 5-kilometre run.

Furthermore, a 'Senior’s Power Walk', 'Kid’s Mile' 3.2km, 1.6km and 800-metre runs have been scheduled for the event.

Race Director Hussain Shujau said that the marathon would include many foreign participants in order to promote sports tourism and take long-distance​ running events to a higher level.

Shujau iterated that many special guests would attend the event which would be "an event with a different and completely new concept".

The closing ceremony with a 'finisher party' and an award ceremony will take place on March 9.
