A local youth who fell head first into the sea from a waterslide has passed away following complications owing to severe injuries.
The youth was picnicking in Kaafu atoll Gudagiri island when the incident struck.
The victim, identified as Umar Abdul Hannan, aged 34 went to the island with a group people last week.
Urbanco, which manages the picnic island, confirmed the accident took place from the waterslide installed on the beach.
"Generally the slide is used by children, with the depth of the sea ahead ideal for them which is around two-feet deep. Umar passed away after sliding head first, and with brunt force to his neck resulting in spinal damage," Urbanco's statement read.
The statement also confirmed the victim was immediately transferred from the picnic island to Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé with the assistance of the island's emergency medical officer.
The victim also underwent surgery IGMH, but faced complications after the operation. He was then transferred to ADK Hospital due to the severity of his condition, while the hospital confirmed he was brain-dead when he arrived.
