Former President Abdulla Yameen's legal team on Thursday amended the appeal documents and resubmitted them to the High Court.

The High Court made the request last Thursday, on March 9; it did not reveal any further details.

The court of first appeal confirmed that Yameen's lawyers changed the papers and filed them again this Thursday. It has not yet decided whether to accept the case.

Yameen's legal team filed another appeal at the High Court on Monday against the Criminal Court's order to pay USD 3.4 million (MVR 52 million) to the state within six months, in connection with his conviction in the Vaavu atoll Aarah case. A decision has yet to be made on whether the court will accept the case.

The former president was sentenced to 11 years in prison by the Criminal Court on December 25, last year, for bribery and money laundering charges in the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah, while he was still in office.

The opposition has expressed concern over the delays in accepting the case; they maintain that Yameen is their presidential candidate for the upcoming election. His lawyers have repeatedly said that he would be freed by the courts this month.

As of now, due to his hefty jail sentence, Yameen has been disqualified from contesting in the presidential election slated for September 9.
