The Elections Commission (EC) has announced that three candidates have submitted their nominations to compete in the by-election for the Kaafu atoll Guraidhoo constituency.

The seat became vacant after the previous Member of Parliament, Ibrahim Riza, passed away due to cancer on February 22 after serving for 14 years. The by-election is scheduled to be held on April 15, and the deadline for candidates to submit their forms expired on Monday.

Ismail Habeeb, the Vice President of the Elections Commission, confirmed that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM), and Maldives National Party (MNP) had submitted their forms by the deadline. The draw for the candidates will take place today, he said.

The candidates are MDP's Ibrahim Shaaz, PPM candidate Hussain Riza (the brother of Ibrahim Riza) and MNP's candidate Ali Arif. Arif is a former leading teacher at Guraidhoo School.

This is the second constituency to hold a by-election during this parliamentary term, with the previous one being held for the Shaviyani atoll Komandoo constituency after the death of former MP Hussain Waheed last year.
