Ghiyasuddin students shine in World Scholar’s Cup

Ghiyasuddin International School's students shone at the World Scholar's Cup (WSC) held at the famous Yale University, one of the US' Ivy League Universities.

Three junior teams, each consisting of three students, took part in the finals of the competition. They won 47 gold medals, and 13 bronze and silver in total.

Out of the three teams, one achieved fourth place in the South Asian region. They competed against 400 teams from 58 countries in the finals, and ranked 42nd overall.

The team comprised of the students, Ali Rashwan Mohamed of Grade 9, and Shaina Mohamed Shainee and Sulaf Moosa Latheef of Grade 8. Rashwan was the star out of all Maldivian contestants, winning the most number of medals.

Billabong International School, Ahmadhiyya School and Gateway International School also participated in the WSC.

Sonali Jameelah, from Billabong International School, won a gold medal in the team writing competition and silver medal in the team social studies contest, and another silver medal in the individual writing competition.

Likewise, the team from Gateway International School achieved two gold medals and nine silver medals.

WSC is an international team academic programme which was founded by the US company, DemiDec, in 2006. Debates are held over a wide range of topics and the students also take part in quizzes across different subjects.
