Maldives Police Service on Monday began an investigation into the destruction of a vegetable farm in Goidhoo, Baa Atoll.
According to Police, the perpetrator(s) had badly destroyed the farm's produce including snake gourd and sponge gourd plants. The matter was reported at approximately 0830 hrs on April 20.
The incident occurred at a time when food security has been a main concern for the people amid the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak in the country.
Maldives' first confirmed case of COVID-19 from the capital city of Male', was recorded on April 15, involving a local woman who presented to the flu clinic in Malé after developing coronavirus-like symptoms. At present, the country has not identified an index patient for the outbreak.
As of now, Maldives records 67 confirmed and 51 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 16 recoveries.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The novel coronavirus has infected over 2.4 million people and claimed over 165,700 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 633,300 people have recovered.
