The Parliament, on Sunday, declared that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver his parliamentary address on June 8, Saturday.

According to Secretary General of the Parliament Fathimath Niusha, the Prime Minister will make his address at 1845 hrs.

She added that Parliament Secretariat will request the presence of every cabinet minister and foreign ambassador at the session.

As per the Constitution and parliamentary regulations, foreign entities can only speak in parliament with the majority vote of members. The motion was proposed by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The Parliament, on May 29, issued its unanimous approval to Prime Minister Modi, to deliver a parliamentary address during his visit to Maldives from June 7-8.

Modi first visited Maldives in November 2018 to attend the inauguration of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The current government's first official state visit to India took place shortly after President Solih assumed office, in an attempt to strengthen the bilateral relations between Maldives and India which deteriorated in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration.

Plans for a state trip to Maldives during the presidency of Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom did not come to fruition.

Modi has asserted that bilateral relations between Maldives and India would improve further during his tenure.

He is visiting the country upon the invitation of President Solih.
