President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that seven urban centres, the Northern Integrated Development Zone, consisting of three atolls, and the Southern Integrated Development Zone, consisting of four atolls, are being determined in line with his manifesto.

The President made this statement in a post on social media X after the Ministry of Housing, Land and Urban Development's announcement of seven islands set to be made urban centres met with public criticism.
The islands where the president has determined to develop urban centres are;
- Raa atoll Ungoofaaru
- Baa atoll Eydhafushi
- Lhaviyani atoll Naifaru
- Alif Dhaalu atoll Mahibadhoo
- Faafu atoll Nilandhoo
- Dhaalu atoll Kudahuvadhoo
- Laamu atoll Fonadhoo
The President said that in order to bring about sustainable regional development, in addition to the Male' Urban Region, Northern Integrated Development Zone and Southern Integrated Development Zone will be developed to provide high standard services.
He said that the government's policy is to develop three atolls from the north and four atolls from the south as urban centres.
He said that these will be proposed under the 20 year masterplan and said that opinion will be sought from residents, councils, and other related agencies, as well as have participation from technical experts.
A statement released by the Housing Ministry offered further details.
Northern atolls proposed for infrastructural development:
- Haa Alif atoll
- Haa Dhaalu atoll
- Shaviyani atoll
- Noonu atoll
Southern atolls proposed for infrastructural development:
- Gaafu Alif atoll
- Gaafu Dhaalu atoll
- Fuvahmulah
- Addu
The Ministry said that the urban centres in South and North are in addition to the seven islands announced yesterday.
