Waiving penalties issued over overdue payments of utility bills will be enforced next month with these fines retracted once payments for previous service usages have been settled.
Utility companies have declared that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's decision to waive penalties issued for overdue payments of water and electricity in households will be enforced next month and that these fines will be retracted once payments for service usages has been settled.
Speaking at a gathering held for senior officials of utility companies to exchange information, Managing Director of Male' Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), Abdul Matheen Mohamed stated that the company will be waiving penalties for bills due at the end of 2023 and elaborated that the payments for these bills can be settled either simultaneously or under installments.
Revealing that the fines issued for overdue water bills stands at nearly MVR 17 million, he revealed the inclusion of 3000 customers within this.
Matheen further explained that the penalties for both water and electricity bills will be waived once payments for former service usages has been settled.
Muaz Mohamed Rasheed, Managing Director of Fenaka Corporation Limited which provides utility services across a wide number of islands, stated that essential procedures for waiving these fines are being enforced and remarked that this development will allow substantial eases for the people of the country.
"These bills remain unsettled because a large penalty has been issued. The public will be saved from a substantial debt," said Muaz.
Moreover, Managing Director of State Electric Company (STELCO), Hussain Fahmy asserted domestic customers of the company has been extended a window to settle their payments in installations starting from April 1 until the end of the year.
He said that the penalties have risen above the original payment value for some customers and emphasized that retracting these fines will offer significant relief to their struggles. Fahmy had further implored the people of the country to fully utilize this opportunity.
