Ooredoo Maldives has gone down in history as the first telecommunications company to connect the entire archipelago with a 4G+ network, providing 4G internet connection to every island of the Maldives.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Ooredoo’s 4G+ network at Hotel Jen on Tuesday, the company’s CEO Vikram Sinha declared that this achievement is the result of a wish expressed by Sheikh Saud Bin Nasset Al Thani, the Group CEO of Ooredoo based in Qatar. He cited Al Thani’s observation that the strong internet data provided by Ooredoo in the region of capital Male fell short in other areas of the Maldives.
Noting the unique challenges posed by an island nation for such a project, CEO Sinha nevertheless proclaimed that the efforts to carry out the responsibility placed on Ooredoo Maldives by CEO Al Thani have borne fruit rapidly. Ooredoo’s network was upgraded to a 4G+ network within a mere 19 days and the entire archipelago has been connected with a submarine cable system, providing 4G data to every inhabited island.
He also extoled and thanked Ooredoo’s contractor and team that had worked on the project, praising them as the most exceptional team he had seen in his carrier of fifteen years.
Ooredoo’s Head of Sales Hussain Niyaz told reporters after the ceremony that the company’s project team had visited every inhabited island of the Maldives to provide the 4G+ service.
He also announced that the company will launch special plans and services soon for their 4G+ network. The highlight of these plans is, he said, the special 4G smartphone payment plan Ooredoo will offer customers that currently do not own a smartphone.
“With the advancement to Ooredoo’s network, there will be more simplicity and ease for Maldivians to obtain smart services such as online education and eHealth.”
Ooredoo completed its USD 25 million venture to lay a nationwide submarine cable system from north to south of the Maldives earlier this month. Under the project, the company has already commenced 4G+ services to a number of islands, and plans to establish broadband internet connection in all inhabited islands within three months.
