Vice President Faisal Naseem, on late Sunday, claimed that there are no wrongdoings in the coalition administration’s conduct to win votes in the upcoming parliamentary elections, and that they will not be intimidated by threats.
While expressing support for Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s “Agenda 19” policies, VP Naseem said that working towards betterment is not solely possible from a single party. The VP expressed the sentiments at the campaign rally for MDP Deputy Chairperson and party candidate for Hulhumale constituency, Ali Niyaz.
Moreover, Naseem said that the rights of people working for reform with sincerity, honesty and peacefully, are not nullified regardless of party affiliations.
While VP Naseem maintains his stance that MDP is innocent of misconduct, conflict has arisen within his affiliated Jumhooree Party (JP) for expressing support and campaigning for MDP candidates. JP leader Qasim Ibrahim is facing criticism from some JP leadership members for extending support for opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) candidates.
“Even the smallest of injuries takes time to heal. However, while a month has barely passed since every act other than murder was committed, it’s been forgotten,” said Naseem, indirectly referring to Qasim working with former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
Furthermore, the vice president referred to the five years of Yameen’s administration as the darkest time in Maldivian history.
According to the VP, Yameen was defeated in the presidential elections while he wielded a majority in the parliament and government institutions in his palm. He remarked that Yameen attained power that no world leader should attain, but was unsuccessful in the elections due to brutality and corruption.
The VP asserted that MDP’s Agenda 19 would protect and facilitate ease for citizens, expand job opportunities and boost the economy.
