Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi has arrived in the Maldives last night for an official visit.
The one-day official visit of the Japanese Foreign Minister is at the invitation of Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid. Minister Hayashi was welcomed at Velana International Airport (VIA) by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Khaleel.
During the visit, official talks will focus on further strengthening the bilateral relations between Japan and the Maldives. According to the Foreign Ministry, Minister Hayashi is also scheduled to hold a meeting with Defense Minister Mariya Ahmed Didi.
As part of the visit, agreements will be signed between both countries regarding human development scholarships funded by Japan, assistance to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), and visa facilitation for Maldivian diplomatic and official passport holders.
The last time Japan's Foreign Minister visited the Maldives was in 2017 during the administration of former President Abdullah Yameen.
