Health Protection Agency (HPA) said they will start administering booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine to the public on Saturday.

In an announcement made on Thursday, the agency said prior appointments have to be made in order to receive the booster dose.

Booster shot will be administered to people above the age of 18 that has received two doses of the Covid vaccine. Six months should have passed since the second dose was administered in order to be eligible for the booster dose.

Maldives will be administering Pfizer vaccines they received from the United States as the booster. In December, 100,620 doses of Pfizer vaccine was delivered to Maldives via the COVAX facility.

The delay in starting the large scale booster program was due to lack of syringes. However, HPA had been administering booster doses to health workers and frontline airport staff in addition to people with long term health issues as well.

Similar to other countries, Maldives is also observing a surge in Covid cases as Omicron, the new dominant variant, spreads through the nation.
