Police have reversed their decision earlier today to grant an extension on the deadline for the handover of two apartments in Hulhumale' that had allegedly been purchased from Football Association of Maldives (FAM) funds.

The extension was granted on request from former President of Football Association of Maldives (FAM) Bassam Adeel Jaleel, who is accused of misusing FAM funds to purchase these apartments.

Police have now ordered Bassam to hand over the flats before the end of tomorrow, following widespread public criticism towards their earlier decision.

In a statement issued tonight, Police said that Bassam had been ordered to vacate the apartments on September 28 in accordance with an order from Hulhumale' Magistrate Court. However, Bassam requested an extension the next day, they said.

An extension was granted until the end of yesterday in consideration of the points raised by Bassam.

The statement says that the extension had been requested until the end of yesterday by Bassam in a letter sent last Friday.

However, Police said that after considering the matter, a decision has been reached that no further extensions can be granted, and said that efforts are ongoing to take the apartments under their supervision.

Police said that if the two apartments are not handed over by midnight tomorrow, Police will take necessary actions to seize the apartments under the boundaries of the law.

An earlier announcement today to grant an extension for the handover until the end of the month met with strong criticism from the public.

Bassam is accused of purchasing the two flats in Hulhumale' with funds given by FIFA to assist football clubs in overcoming the challenges faced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Police have since forwarded the case to the Prosecutor General's Office.

In this case, Police also applied to the PG Office to press charges against the seller of the apartments, Amin Construction, as well as then FAM Finance Head Mohamed Ageel and FAM employee Hassan Waheed.
