Malé City Council has opened a plant nursery with a butterfly garden in Hulhumalé on Monday, September 18.

Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said it was the largest such nursery in the Maldives and would feature a wide array of flora, including flowering and fruit trees.

The mayor added that the nursery would serve as a means to increase the revenue for the City Council through the sale of plants.

The nursery would supply trees for individual customers for gardening purposes and tourist resorts for their landscaping projects.

Dr. Muizzu viewed the introduction of the nursery as another step forward in transforming Malé region into an eco-friendly environment.

Additionally, Dr. Muizzu also mentioned that work is in progress to launch a dedicated website that will offer information about the plants available for sale. He promised to introduce the website soon, although he did not specify a particular date.

While speaking to local media after the inauguration of the nursery, Dr. Muizzu highlighted that the most distinctive feature of the nursery is the butterfly garden, which has been designed to accommodate four different types of butterflies.

He also noted that though the current butterfly population is scarce, the garden was designed with trees that attract butterflies to habit and populate. The mayor is confident the garden will enhance growth in the butterfly population eventually.

He said that while the current butterfly population is limited, the garden has been designed with trees and features that are attractive to butterflies, with the expectation that it will eventually lead to an increase in the butterfly population. The mayor expressed confidence that the garden would contribute to the growth of the butterfly population over time.

"In a few days, the site would be home to over 1,000 butterflies of four species. That is the best feature of this place," Dr. Muizzu said.

The nursery features fruit trees ranging from mango to gauva, date palms, and other different types of trees, according to Dr. Muizzu.
