While there had been no direct flights between Canadian and Russian airports, the decision by the world's second-largest country -- Russia is the largest -- could seriously complicate flights by Russian carrier Aeroflot to or from the US, as well as to other countries to the south. Russia has requested assurance from Maldivian government towards uninterrupted permission for its flights to operate to the island nation.

The country has put forth the request to Maldives at a time when several nations have imposed travel restrictions on Russian airlines amid the ongoing clash between Moscow and Kiev.

In a letter from Russian transport authority, sent to Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, it had stated that several countries placed sanctions and restrictions in direct violation to respective bilateral and trade agreements.

Furthermore, Russia had requested from Maldives government to extend services from VIA staff to Aeroflot which operates a total of eight flights to the island nation already.

Moreover, Russia assured that all of its flights will fit the international safety and security standards.

At this time, an official statement from Maldives Civil Aviation Authority had not been provided regarding the issue.
