Play area for children with special needs established

A special play area that can be used by children with special needs has been established in Maldives for the first time.

Initiated by the Rotary Club of Male' City, this playground is set to be opened at 17 00 hrs this evening and is located inside the Kudakudhinge Bageecha (Children's Park), the most popular children's park in Maldives.

Speaking with Mihaaru News, a member of the club, Mariyam Adhiya Shukoor stated that the club took the initiative to establish this play area due to Maldives lacking equipment that can be specifically utilized by children with special needs in any playground at present.

She stressed that although children's playgrounds have designs that allow ease of entry to children with special needs, the lack of dedicated equipment is a significant deprivation.

"We are opening a play area with material that can played by children with special needs as well as other children for the first time in Maldives," said Adhiya.

She further elaborated that the all-inclusive playground, to be opened by the Rotary Club this evening, features a carousel where children in wheelchairs can sit alongside other children. Additionally, there are swings designed for children who cannot stay seated, allowing them to lie down. Moreover, the playground includes additional equipment that can be operated with the support of a parental figure on one side.

Adhiya stated that the Rotary Club hopes additional parks such as this will become established in Maldives and stated that interested parties will receive technical and other forms of assistance from the club.

Rotary Clubs are organizations dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the communities in which they operate. The Rotary Club of Male' has provided substantial assistance to local islands, including the establishment of water plants in some areas.
