Remaining mindful of cancer is crucial, especially as various forms of the disease are increasingly prevalent among Maldivians. Early diagnosis significantly enhances the likelihood of successfully overcoming cancer. Oncologist Kamal Raj Soti from ADK Hospital emphasizes the importance of this approach.

"Oral cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer and cervical cancer are among the most common cancers among Maldivians. If these cancers are diagnosed early in the disease, they are more likely to be treated and eradicated," he said.

Dr. Kamal said ADK has been encouraging the general public to take up tests for early detection by sensitizing them to various cancer diseases on 'Cancer Awareness Day' and other days celebrated this month.

"Currently, we conduct pap smears, a common screening for cervical cancer recommended from the age of 21, right here. This test is recommended every three years. For early detection of colon cancer, individuals should undergo a stool test or colonoscopy starting at the age of 45. ADK Hospital is well-equipped to perform these essential tests," stated the doctor.

Dr. Kamal emphasized the significance of undergoing a breast scan starting from the age of 20 to facilitate early detection of breast cancer. Drawing attention to the rising prevalence of oral cancers, often linked to smoking, he strongly recommended quitting smoking early and undergoing regular check-ups.

Highlighting the available resources, Dr. Kamal pointed out that hospitals such as ADK possess the necessary facilities to conduct tests aimed at detecting cancer symptoms. He urged individuals to make use of these resources and adopt preventive measures.

The oncologist stressed the importance of initiating preventive measures at an early age, aligning with the goal of early disease detection.

"It is important to vaccinate girls above 11 years of age to prevent cervical cancer. When you are sexually active, having safe relationships and not having many sexual partners is the biggest preventive measure against the disease," the doctor said.

Dr. Kamal emphasized the importance of reducing the consumption of red meat to mitigate the risk of colon cancer. The doctor also recommends adopting a balanced diet as an effective measure to prevent this form of cancer.

Highlighting the surge in oral cancers, the doctor stressed the importance of avoiding harmful habits such as smoking, the use of chewing tobacco, and vaping. Emphasizing the significant role of tobacco in the development of oral cancers, he urged individuals to steer clear of these detrimental practices.

The doctor highlighted the availability of a smoking cessation clinic at ADK, providing support for those looking to quit smoking.

ADK Hospital offers a comprehensive array of modern cancer treatment services and has established a dedicated Oncology Department to address the complexities of the disease. This department focuses on cancer diagnosis, treatment planning, information dissemination, and counseling for patients. With a specialized oncologist and two dedicated nurses for chemotherapy, the hospital ensures personalized care.

The Oncology Department includes a well-equipped chemo room capable of treating three patients simultaneously, providing essential chemotherapy—the primary treatment for cancer patients. Special arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth and comfortable treatment experience for patients.

Utilizing the advanced 18F – FDG – PET CT technology, ADK Hospital conducts cancer screening, aligning with global standards. The hospital's proficient staff can efficiently perform the scans to contribute to early cancer detection.
