The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) on Tuesday has stated that they remain undecided on whether or not to appeal the High Court's decision to revoke prison sentences handed down against former president Abdulla Yameen.

Ex-President Yameen was arrested and sentenced to prison for four years on charges of accepting bribes and seven years on charges of money laundering, both in relation to the leasing of V. Aarah for tourism development through the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC). The Criminal Court handed down these prison sentences against the former president in 2022.

Last week, a High Court bench revoked both verdicts issued by the lower court against former president Yameen and sent his case back to the Criminal Court for retrial.

An official from PGO stated on Tuesday that no decision has been made yet on whether or not to appeal the case at the Supreme Court. There exists a 60-day deadline within which such cases can be submitted for appeal at the Supreme Court.

Former MP for Felidhoo constituency Yoosuf Naeem was also sentenced to three years in prison in the V. Aarah corruption case. His sentence was also revoked and sent for retrial during the appeal proceedings at High Court last week.
