Adhaalath Party (AP) of the ruling coalition, on Wednesday, announced that the party’s congress will be held on February 26 and 27 next year.

According to the party, members will be elected for several high-profile positions during the congress, including the posts of party’s President, Vice President, Presidents of various areas, and Steering Commitee’s of the party’s branches.

Adhaalath Party will open for applications for the party’s Youth Council, Women’s Council and Judge’s Council.

The congress, described as “the most important pillar of the party’s charter”, will be attended by scholars as well as representatives of AP’s Council, Adhaalath Party said.

The party’s current president is incumbent Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, who recently came under fire for “irresponsible” comments over a high-profile sexual assault case, which the public lambasted, stating that they minimised the experiences of sexual violence survivors and victims.

The opposition coalition, consisting of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC), revealed that efforts were underway to lodge a motion of no-confidence against Imran.

However, ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which holds Parliament supermajority, shut down the oppositions attempts, backing Imran amidst the controversy.

In addition to Imran, several other members of Adhaalath Party is serving in political positions of Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s administration.

As per Elections Commission’s statistics, over 6,000 members are registered at Adhaalath Party.
