President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced on Wednesday that the Maafaru Falhu near Alif Dhaalu Atoll Mahibadhoo will be reclaimed to provide solutions to the housing difficulties faced by the island's residents.
The President has made this announcement with just two days left in his administration. This same project is also included in President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledges.
On a visit to the island during a campaign trip for the first round of September's presidential election, Muizzu stated that reclaiming Maafaru Falhu is one of two possible options to solve the housing difficulties in the island.
"The place can be reclaimed and developed to provide medical services to the whole atoll, infrastructural development and the building of homes, economic development projects and the space required for social needs," he said at the time.
Muizzu said then that the first step in achieving this would be to bring Maafaru Falhu under the jurisdiction of Mahibadhoo. He stated that the place can be developed under a long term plan.
