Hiranya Kumudumali de Alvis, a Sri Lankan woman, is now facing three charges related to the murder of her newborn child, who was discovered discarded in a trash heap in Alif Dhaalu Atoll Dhigurah.
The charges filed against her include intentional murder, endangering a child's health violating a duty of care, and knowingly concealing a murder.
As stated by the Prosecutor General's office, the charges are linked to the discovery of the baby's body around 9:28 am on December 3.
The PG office revealed that Hiranya Kumudumali de Alvis, who concealed her pregnancy, gave birth to the baby in the bathroom of a room in Dhigurah between 22:00 pm on December 1 and 05:00 am the next day.
Following the birth in the toilet, the child was removed and placed in a garbage bag in a dustbin around 05:30 am on December 3. She is charged with intentional murder, and if convicted, could face up to 10 to 25 years in prison.
She is also accused of endangering the child's health, safety, and interests, facing a potential sentence of up to 3 years in prison if found guilty.
Furthermore, she is charged with knowingly concealing the death by disposing of the child's body in the dustbin while being aware of the child's demise. The standard punishment for this charge is 9 months and 18 days in jail.
