The body of the newborn discovered at the garbage dump in Alif Dhaalu atoll Dhigurah has been flown back to the Maldives after a postmortem examination.
The body was brought back to Malé on Friday after being taken to India on December 16 for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death, a police media official said. However, the exact location of the body remains unclear.
The murdered infant was discovered in a garbage bag at the island's waste disposal area on December 3. In addition to being deceased, the abandoned infant's umbilical cord was not properly cut.
On the same day, a 30-year-old Sri Lankan woman working at a guest house on the island was arrested for allegedly killing and dumping the infant. She was apprehended at Velana International Airport while attempting to flee the country.
The accused was presented before the Criminal Court, which remanded her into judicial custody.
