MP for South Galolhu Meekail Naseem has submitted a motion to parliament seeking confirmation if witnesses who signed on forged party membership forms are being taken action against.
Meekail, who represents opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), submitted this motion as some senior officials of the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology have signed as witnesses on these illegitimate forms, which he alleges were created using the Department of National Registration (DNR) database in a bid to increase membership of ruling People's National Congress (PNC).
In the motion, Meekail seeks to question Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihusan about what measures will be taken to protect people's personal information as it is evident that identity theft has been committed to fill these PNC membership forms, and to ask if any measures have been taken against those who signed as witnesses on such forms.
Meanwhile, Ihusan has yesterday rejected allegations that he is leading efforts to submit PNC membership forms in the names of some children just turning 18 years of age.
Opposition MDP has also announced that they will be extending legal assistance to any persons who were registered to political parties without their consent.
Ruling party People's National Congress is currently receiving the highest amount of criticism for wrongfully registering members to their party.
In a press release issued yesterday, the party admitted that a number of illegitimate forms had been submitted through their recent membership drives. They stated that the party does not have the necessary resources to check the validity of the thousands of membership forms gathered by party activists and supporters, adding that the challenge is not unique to their party.
Police and the Elections Commission are also conducting investigations into PNC submitting illegitimate membership forms. PNC has said that they will extend full cooperation towards these probes.
