The Committee has passed to issue approval for the three Ministers rejected by the 19th Majlis. Six out of the nine members present at the committee meeting had voted in favor of the approval while 1 opposition member had voted against.
Government Oversight Committee of the Parliament has passed the approval of three Ministers rejected by the 19th People's Majlis which held an opposition majority.
At the time, the opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) had issued a whip to reject four of the 22 nominees proposed for President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's first Cabinet. The parliament had then voted to reject three Ministers on January 29.
These three Ministers denied approval were Attorney General Ahmed Usham, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, and Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed.
Officiated by the Supreme Court Judge HusnuSuood, the President had however reappointed these three nominees back to their ministerial posts, after which their names were resubmitted to the parliament for approval.
Although this case was initially lodged to the 19th Majlis, it was scheduled onto the agenda and sent to the committee for reviewal on Monday this week, during the ongoing 20th People's Majlis.
The meeting of the Government Oversight Committee held Wednesday night to review the case had voted to pass the approval of the Ministers, determining that they lack no requirements to assume their ministerial roles and no issues restraining their appointment by the vote of 6 out of 9 members present at the meeting. Meanwhile, one opposition member had voted against their approval.
While this case on the three Ministers' approval progresses at the parliament, the Ministers in question remain in their ministerial positions following their reappointment to date.
