National airline Maldivian began scheduled flights to the international airport located in Maafaru, Noonu Atoll, on Sunday.
Although Maldivian's flight operations to Maafaru began on Sunday morning, the ceremony to commemorate the achievement will be held at 1600 hrs Sunday evening.
The flight-time from Velana International Airport (VIA) to Maafaru International Airport is 40 minutes, while a one-way ticket costs MVR 750.
Work on Maafaru's USD 60 million airport project commenced in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration, funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).
The airport development was contracted over to Singaporean company Tuff Offshore, with the project completion initially set for July 2018.
However, the deadline was extended various times due to complications with the sub-contractors, in addition to other issues, even after test flights landed in the airport on August 2018.
With the opening of the airport, international flight operations will begin as well. Maafaru airport was developed with the capacity to accommodate A320s and Boeing 737 aeroplanes.
