Names given to islands reclaimed in Addu for tourism

The Addu City Council has approved the names of the newly reclaimed islands in Addu dedicated for tourism.

Three islands were reclaimed in Addu for tourism development. Two of these islands were reclaimed from the lagoon of Hithadhoo and one island was reclaimed from Meedhoo lagoon.

The opportunity to propose names for the islands were announced on August 31.

During the Addu City Council meeting, Mayor Ali Nizar revealed that 60 individuals had submitted names for the new islands. He explained that names were submitted individually for each island, and the chosen names were selected from those proposed by the public. These names were unanimously approved by all Councilors who attended the meeting.

Names given to the 3 islands that will be developed as resorts

1. Dhonhera Fenna 12, for the island reclaimed from Meedhoo lagoon

2. Bolihera, for island 3 reclaimed from Hithadhoo lagoon

3. Dhondheeni Hera, for the island reclaimed from the lagoon north of Hithadhoo

Mayor Nizar said the opportunity to develop resorts in these islands will be announced soon. Highlighting the importance of this project for the development of Addu, he said that this development would bring a transformative change to Addu City.

"[These three resorts] will usher in the most significant economic development for Addu in recent times. This is a historic undertaking, and today will be recorded as a historic day for Addu," Nizar stated.

The mayor said, "We expedited this project as a matter of urgency to attract investors as quickly as possible."

According to Nizar, the efforts made for the development of Addu City are not tied to a specific political ideology, and this work has been carried out by the government to bolster the economy of Addu City.

He said that the government's endeavors to develop Addu City should be embraced by Councilors without regard to political viewpoints.
