The Addu City council has uprooted and cut down a total of 55 palm trees lined up across Addu City Link Road, claiming they pose dangers to travelers.

According to council member Ahmed Saeed, the palm trees pose accident hazards to travelers by the link-road, especially during stormy seasons or weather.

Locals claim that the palm trees across the road will be more than 70 years old, while many who frequently use the asphalt-laden road complain about the hazardous nature of the trees.

Meanwhile, the Addu City council confirmed it had acquired permission from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before cutting down the palms.

Moreover, the council plans on planting trees in a safer manner, in the same location along with additional lighting to reduce the possibility of roadside accidents.

Although the council's decision was a step towards ensuring the safety of the public using the link-road, many of the netizens had opined otherwise with some claiming the area has lost its beauty.
